- 1.0 Installation
- ----------------
-
- To install Canon WebRecord: Run Webrec\Setup.exe from the CD-ROM.
-
- Installation will require a few minutes and may require you to
- reboot your system. During installation you will be asked a
- configuration question about your Internet connection. The choice
- you make can be changed at any time after installation. It is
- not critical that it is set correctly during installation. You may
- read some notes about the choice under "Proxy Settings" below.
-
- You can view the Canon WebRecord tour directly from the CD-ROM without
- installing WebRecord. Please see the next section.
-
- 2.0 Viewing the Canon WebRecord Tour
- ------------------------------------
-
- To view the Canon WebRecord tour: Run Webrec\Tour.exe from the CD-ROM.
-
- The tour has two sections, one overviews the features of Canon WebRecord,
- the other shows how to use it. Each section takes a few minutes to
- view.
-
- The tour can be viewed under Windows 95 and Windows NT. Windows 3.1
- users may view the tour by running Tour31.exe. (Note that the WebRecord
- program itself will only run under Windows 95.)
-
- 3.0 System Requirements
- -----------------------
-
- Minimum requirements for Canon WebRecord are:
-
- Windows 95
- 80486DX CPU
- 8Mb RAM (12Mb recommended)
- 8Mb of free disk space (16Mb recommended)
-
- Note that this version of Canon WebRecord only runs under Windows 95.
- Not Windows 3.1 or Windows NT (future versions will operate under
- Windows NT).
-
- 4.0 Proxy Settings
- ------------------
-
- Most Internet connections are made through a proxy server. If your
- Internet connection is made through a proxy server, WebRecord,
- just like your browser, needs to be given some information about it.
- WebRecord offers some shortcuts to help you get your proxy settings
- right first time. You may:
-
- - use your Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings;
-
- - use your Netscape Navigator 2.0+ settings; or
-
- - use settings you make in WebRecord's own settings panel.
-
- These options can be set during installation and later in WebRecord's
- own settings panel.
-
- You can use the following guide to help you determine which of these
- options best suits you:
-
- - if you have Internet Explorer 3.0+ installed on your computer,
- and it is able to access the Internet correctly, select the
- "Use Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings" option;
-
- - otherwise, if you have Netscape 2.0+ installed on your computer,
- and it is able to access the Internet correctly, select the
- "Use Netscape 2.0+ proxy settings" option;
-
- - otherwise, select the "Use these proxy settings" option and
- consult your system administrator or Internet service provider
- for the values to enter.
-
- If you are unable to make the second or third options operate,
- install Internet Explorer 3.0+, get it operational, then select
- the "Use Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings" option.
-
- Note: If you are using SOCKS to connect to your proxy, and you have
- selected "Use these proxy settings", you must enter your proxy
- host name into the settings panel in the form:
-
- socks=http://hostname:port
-
-
- 5.0 Known Problems and Workarounds
- ----------------------------------
-
- Pages visited in Internet Explorer don't always appear in WebRecord's list:
-
- In normal operation, pages visited in Internet Explorer 3.0+
- are automatically added to the WebRecord print list. Sometimes
- this mechanism stops working. In these cases, either copy and
- paste the URL from the Internet Explorer "Location" box, or
- use one of the other methods of adding to WebRecord's print list
- as described in the WebRecord help.
-
- Simultaneous prints to two local printers can cause a spool32 crash:
-
- If WebRecord is used to print simultaneously to two local
- printers (that is, neither is a network printer) and neither
- print is a "simplified" print, a crash in spool32 will result
- and both print jobs will be lost. To avoid this crash, only
- print on one local printer at a time, or print at least one
- of the jobs in "simplified" mode.
-
- Cancelling the "Authorization" dialog causes current fetches to stop:
-
- Pressing the "Cancel" button on the Authorization panel which is
- displayed when a password protected site is accessed causes any
- fetches currently in progress to stop. To restart them, tick and
- un-tick items which have stopped. Any automatic fetches such as
- "Directly Linked Pages" need to be cancelled with Cancel from the
- Fetch menu, and then restarted.
-
- WebRecord shows a different page from the browser for the same URL:
-
- Occasionally a Web page will be encountered which has one
- appearance in, say, Netscape 3.0, but another very different
- appearance in WebRecord. This is generally caused because the host
- providing the page has been programmed to return a different page
- to, say, a Netscape 3.0 user from that which it returns to another
- browser user. This is done deliberately by site designers who wish
- to include features such as Java or plug-ins in their Web pages,
- but also wish their pages to be viewable by non Java enabled
- browsers. To allow this they design two or more pages and return
- different ones to different users based on what sort of browser
- they are using. WebRecord does not support Java or plug-ins, and
- so may be supplied a different page to that given to, say
- Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0.
-
- (WebRecord's user agent string is "Mozilla/1.0 Canon-WebRecord/1.1.X.Y",
- where X.Y is the last part of the version number.)
-
- Printing can be very slow:
-
- There can be several causes of slow printouts. The first is that
- the printer, or printer driver you are using may not respond well
- to the large volume of data required for a "Full color" or
- "No background color" print (see "Print style" on the Appearance
- tab of the Settings panel). A "Simplified" print requires less
- data to be sent to both the printer driver and the printer and may
- produce a quicker result. This is particularly true of PostScript
- or networked printers.
-
- Another cause of slow prints is having spooling disabled. For
- optimal WebRecord printing on local printers, enable spooling
- through the "Details" tab of your printer's Properties panel.
- (Use Start/Settings/Printers, select the printer, then select
- File/Properties, then select the Details tab and click the
- Spool Settings button. Choose "Spool print jobs so program
- finishes printing faster".)
-
- Sometimes printing of "Full color" and "No background color" pages
- can be improved by using a technique called "banding". When
- banding is used, the pages are produced in parts rather than all at
- once. This can sometimes produce faster printouts. WebRecord does
- have a method of enabling banding for particular printer drivers,
- although it is not available through the normal user interface.
- To enable banding for a new printer driver, edit the file
- WebRecord.ini in the WebRecord program directory and look for
- a line of the form:
-
- <DRIVER>=new
-
- where <DRIVER> is the internal name of the new printer driver.
- WebRecord adds a line like this to the file when you do a non-
- simplified print to a printer driver WebRecord has never encountered.
- To enable banding for this printer driver, change the word "new" to
- "bandingok". Note that some printer drivers do not correctly support
- banding and may produce incorrect results.
-
- Margins are cropped on some printers:
-
- Some printer and printer driver combinations may crop, or trim,
- part of each WebRecord printed page, especially in "Full color" mode.
- To avoid this, select "Wide margins" on the Appearance tab of the
- Settings panel.
-
- 6.0 Hints for optimal performance
- ---------------------------------
-
- To make Canon WebRecord operate more quickly, you can:
-
- Turn off "Show Print Preview" until needed, to avoid repeated display
- updates each time a page is added to the list or the list is rearranged.
-
- Turn off "Auto Tick New URLs" to avoid fetching data and images for
- pages added to the print list each time you surf to a new page in
- your browser.
-
- Use "Simplified" print style (see "Print style" on the Appearance tab
- of the Settings panel).
-
- Check your printer spool settings (see "Printing is very slow" in the
- "Known Problems and Workarounds" section above).
